Ten Green Balloons - Best of the Bazaar

Setting up a small retail space in the Cool-Room at the Waverley Antiques and Collectables Bazaar was a really good move for Ten Green Balloons and its proving to be quite successful… Since opening a small 3x3 metre space I've doubled in size, and really love spending time at H6/TGB. In a way my space has become an extension of home - helped of course by the fact my kitchen table and chairs are in the middle of the space - not really for sale…….

As well as sitting and working occasionally at my kitchen table, merchandising my space, and talking to customers, I absolutely love walking around the Bazaar taking photos of whatever catches my eye, coming home and creating collages like the one above made up of the most popular images from the Ten Green Balloons Facebook Page….

Open Monday - Sunday 10am - 4.45pm

Freelance & Retail at TGB

It's a good thing I'm passionate about growing Ten Green Balloons, love running a small business, and enjoy the world of Freelance, because there is no doubt about it  - it's tough!! When I left my secure 9 - 5, well paid, desk job about 6 years ago ( a life time ago!!) to study photography, I had no idea, I would be working as a Stylist / Stylist Assistant, working casually in an Art Gallery, and running a retail / prop hire business…

Although tough, it can be ultra rewarding, and it has opened up a whole new world filled with flexibility, creative like minded people (and not - if I'm completely honest!), amazing opportunities, new skills, and invaluable lessons….  A lifestyle I'm not giving up or back any time soon!!

Although on the surface it looks like I am juggling three separate careers, (and it feels like a juggling act sometimes) they all tie in together quite nicely, with some cross over. For example Styling on commercial photo shoots helps with merchandising and trend forecasting, and in reverse provides prop hire opportunities… Working in an Art Gallery is constantly inspiring, but from a business point of view provides invaluable Business, Customer Service and Retail experience, and has provided me with styling and prop hire opportunities….

If you are considering working Freelance or Starting your own Business you need to be PASSIONATE,  100% COMMITTED and work REALLY REALLY HARD

and thats just for starters

The Nancy Drew Series c1972

My local Op Shop was having a book sale (buy two get one free) and I came home with the almost complete set of The Nacny Drew Mystery Stories from the 70's - The pages have browned beautifully, but apart from that they are in really good condition with little shelf-ware, no torn pages or inscriptions… Thankfully I found them when I did as they were destined for land fill and are quite collectable - I just remember reading Nancy Drew when I was younger, and the series bought back some nice memories….

Created in 1930 by publisher Edward Stratemeyer the Nancy Drew books were ghostwritten by various authors and published under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene. This series is from the 70's and has been revised and shortened since the series was first published...

New Years Resolutions

2014 has been a challenging year both Personally and Professionally and I'm looking forward to a fresh start in 2015.. during the year however reading Abigail Ahern's BIZ COLUMN  has been a highlight, and the last business column for 2014 has been particularly helpful and inspiring....

"Instead of figuring out what is wrong with your business instead optimise what is right"

Simple really and something I'm going to focus on in 2015 Personally and Professionally

The Green Machine

"How is The Green Machine going Mrs Ten Green Balloons"

Having just doubled in size the Waverley Antiques and Collectables Bazaar means its time to get serious and take things to another level… Abigail Ahern is someone who absolutely knows what she is on about, and in regards to growing my business, I'm finding the Biz Column on her blog an extremely useful resource especially when the doubts start creeping in and I question myself.. WHY AM I DONG THiS!!!

Sure running and growing a business is hard work and sometimes scary, but it can also be extremely satisfying and rewarding, and as it turns out buying a thermos, taking good advice, and not procrastinating was the easy part…..surviving, backing myself, and increasing the risk, in an extremely competitive environment, is when the hard work began… and the rewards increased!!

Sometimes you have to ride through the lows….Today for example, the car was pre packed for one of the biggest outdoor flea markets in Melbourne and it's a wash out….  I've had to pull the pin, write off the stall cost, and figure out what to do with the excess stock sitting in the car…. Again WHY AM I DONG THiS!!! because something bigger and better may just be around the next corner!!
